The Alexander Spirit has been stuck in Devonport since July 1 after the crew refused to sail the vessel to Singapore to be sacked, and replaced by a foreign crew.
From the Examiner
"The 36 Australian workers employed on the tanker started industrial
action after they were advised by employer Caltex they would be sacked
and replaced with a foreign crew for a new international fuel transport
route upon their arrival in Singapore. Five crew members have left the ship due to illness since it docked on
July 1. The ship is scheduled to leave Devonport early Monday morning."
The fact is Caltex and Shell are closing all oil refining capacity in Australia and moving it to Asia. Why should these maritime workers play Caltex's game? This is most likely caused by the Abbott government's free trade agreements removing tariffs on imported fuel, just like Abbott shut-down the entire Australian auto manufacturing industry.
