Firestorm

A firestorm destroyed 40% of Dunally in Southern Tasmania today (Friday January 4) and houses in surrounding settlements. A firestorm is a conflagration which attains such intensity that it creates and sustains its own wind system. The Bureau of Meteorology station at Copping recorded a temperature surge of 55 degrees coupled with increased wind speeds. A bushfire micro-climate was recorded possibly for the first time. IT is saddened by the loss of homes in today's bushfires. Another fire in the Upper Derwent Valley near Lake Repulse is close to forestry tree-sit protester Miranda Gibson. ABC news reported the fire was burning out of control in tree plantations. The ABC also reported firefighters were thin on the ground at the Forcett fire. Another major fire is burning south of Bicheno as well as another at Montamana south of Rocky Cape. No sign of Lara Giddings, Will Hodgman or Nick McKim is there? Their holidays are more important than whats happening in Tasmania. Image courtesy M & J Guliani via ABC

I hope some of those affected by the bushfires were public servants. They have no other natural predators given Tassie's defunct Integrity Commission. Needs to be something to help maintain the balance. Smaller public service can only be better.

Comment 1. 'Public servants' were also fighting the fires although thanks to their politician managers they are under-resourced.

You bet #2: any corrupt firefighters, and history shows they are replete with pyromaniacs among their ranks or backburns lit for dubious benefit and many would assert with criminal motivations, would not be accountable either before Tassie's defunct Integrity Commission. Any corrupt firefighters are also better off gone either as nature would deem appropriate or off interstate/overseas until Tassie's Integrity Commission can be fixed up.
